Topic Three: Rhinoceros, Part One

Question 4:

4. The text compares the woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer and Hans Burgkmair; which of the two woodcuts do you prefer and why? Please also post this response on your blog, along with an image of your preferred print.
I prefer Burgkmair's woodcut better. Durer's piece is more ornate and fantastical but I enjoy the simplicity and softness of it in comparison. I also prefer way the details of the spine, hair, and skin folds are depicted. it feels like something a prehistoric or ancestral rhino might look like. Durer's is pretty, but it feels more like a fictional beast decked out in armor from a fantasy picture book. Though I guess if you were to ask me which I would prefer to have hanging in my home I might choose that one.

Question 7:

7. Which depiction of the rhinoceros did you find to be the most amusing, and why? Please also post this response to your blog, along with an image of the print from the text you found to be the most amusing.
Definitely Durer's depiction. It was the prettiest, most ornate, imaginative, most fantastical, and inspired armor. It is easy to see why it was the most influential. We also still have the original drawing he used as an added bonus. Though the text does say something about there being multiple editions with his work in it and the 2nd one having the most impact so who knows what really happened.

It would be followed closely by Emperor Maximillian's prayer book depiction because it is slightly more naturalistic in form with various patterning on the skin and with more of an ornamental background which I find intriguing.
