Topic 4 - Assignment 1 : Street Garden - Vizcaya
I actually used my trip to Vizcaya to do my assignment on. Not because I did not want to look for other places, (trust me, I do a lot of walking, a lot of getting lost, a lot of wandering around, and a lot of photos) but because I did not really want to do so much of a city scape and I felt Vizcaya to really be my ideal place. I did not think this assignment would turn out to be as big a deal as it turned into but it actually did take me a while so I was not particularly concerned in that regard.
Below are my notes, sketches, and a map to Vizcaya.
This is my base sketch for this piece. I actually did it in non-photo blue. I found it useful because I like the blue coming through but I can also get rid of it in the future by scanning it or turning it into something else if I ever feel like it.
Work in progress.
This is not actually a scene from Vizcaya. Simply one inspired by it. I was also actually inspired by an old gesture based drawing piece I did of Forsyth Park from back when I was in Georgia.
I am actually missing a lot of my progress shots. This assignment actually took my about 4 days not including the notes, sketches, or the late night edits I made after asking some of my peers to review it for me before class.
Details
One of the critiques that I received was that I should work on my line weight and mark making skills and since I had not done any pieces in graphite for this class I thought that would be a good way to go with that.
Finished Class piece for Critique
Critique was a bit flat for me unfortunately. Striking out again is never fun but dislike is better than apathy is the saying, right? I'm not really sure how to feel but I still got some decent advice to consider. My piece was clearly unimpressive in comparison to most of the others. I did good in terms of some basic principles of design including my mark making and some of the patterning I used, which it good. My use of balance and perspective was also well received and someone even mentioned my lighting which pleased me. To me, I actually wish I had only had more time to make it bigger. I feel the piece might have benefitted from that, personally. But I was lacking contrast. Which Emma did warn be about. Don said I just didn't have enough variation in my tonality and he is totally right. If you squint, the shades blend together and there is maybe only 3 distinct variation patches. I just do not have dark enough elements to make this work. And even though I have a solid composition and a triangular focal point, I should have done a better job of avoiding the center. And truthfully, I was worried so much about the technical aspect that I lacked in terms of originality and outside thinking, which really sucks to hear and have to admit to yourself. Especially when you thought you weren't doin to bad just a few minutes before. But it is good that I can realized this.
I can only get better, right? I'll try my hardest and hopefully my next project will be well received and more creative.
